Senior councillors will discuss the city’s progress towards becoming a carbon neutral city at a meeting of the council’s executive board next week.

Work has now started on a £40million council housing development which will see the regeneration of Throstle Recreation Ground and the former Middleton Skills Centre in Leeds.

Twenty-six skilled jobs have been created locally in a key green industry as a result of Leeds City Council’s investment in low carbon upgrades earlier this year.

Leeds City Council is working with Better Homes Yorkshire to install solar panels and insulation on hundreds of the city’s coldest privately-owned homes thanks to government funding secured earlier this year. The green measures will help residents save money on energy bills and cut the city’s carbon footprint.

Leeds City Council has announced that St James’s Hospital, Quarry House and Trinity Academy will soon receive low carbon heat and hot water from the city’s district heating network. 

Eligible residents will be able to install energy saving technology—including solar panels, cavity wall insulation and, in some areas, external wall insulation—completely free of charge.

Leeds City Council has confirmed plans to connect 26 tower blocks to cheaper, greener heating after appointing a contractor to deliver the work by 2024.

Leeds City Council has secured £2.9 million of funding to provide targeted energy efficiency improvements such as cavity wall insulation, air source heat pumps, and external wall insulation in areas with high levels of fuel poverty and inefficient homes.
