Potternewton residents and businesses invited to share their views on flood risk options

Flooding Climate change

Residents and businesses in Potternewton are being encouraged to attend a series of drop-in events to hear about the latest plans to reduce flood risk in the area.

The events will be an opportunity to provide feedback on a list of options that have been developed by Leeds City Council in partnership with the Environment Agency and WSP.

Potternewton has a history of surface water flooding which is caused by heavy rain placing additional pressure on the drainage network.

The options have been developed following the creation of a new digital model that has identified where the flooding is coming from and what areas are most at risk.

Further testing for each option will take place, however, the council would first like to hear from residents with their views on the issue, as well as gaining feedback on the potential solutions.

Residents and businesses can come and talk to the team on Tuesday 18 February, 10am-1pm and Thursday 20 February, 4pm-7pm at the Reginald Centre, 263 Chapeltown Road, Leeds, LS7 3EX.

Options include:

  • Additional flood storage at potential housing development site on Newton Road
  • Flood storage at Scott Hall playing fields
  • A flood wall at Potternewton Park
  • Flood storage at Chapel Allerton Hospital
  • Flood storage at Chapel Allerton Primary School sports fields

Cllr Mohammed Rafique, executive member for environment and active lifestyles said:

“Storm Ciara is a stark reminder that flooding is one of the greatest risks facing Leeds. It is therefore vital we do everything we can now to build our resilience to future events.

“Engaging with communities at this early stage of the project means we can incorporate resident feedback into any designs and ensure the right solution for families and properties in Potternewton.

“I encourage local residents and businesses to attend one of the events to help shape our future plans.”
