Ukrainian Independence Day thank you to the people of Leeds

Ukraine

A group of Ukrainian refugees has said a heartfelt thank you to the people of Leeds who have opened their hearts and homes to those in need.

A new video, released by Leeds City Council to coincide with Ukrainian Independence Day on 24 August, features three Ukrainian refugees who have started to rebuild their lives in Leeds following the outbreak of war in their homeland.

Olga Tarasova, Irina Grishko, and Olha Pravdenko said they wanted people to understand the life-changing impact of the Homes for Ukraine scheme and to say thank you for how welcome they have been made to feel.

Commenting on the Homes for Ukraine scheme, Olga Tarasova said: “When Michelle, my sponsor contacted me, it was like a new chance to continue to live. Thank you everyone and thank you for all the people who are now here.”

The video comes as Leeds City Council launches a fresh appeal for people to come forward as Homes for Ukraine hosts. While Leeds has welcomed over 850 Ukrainian refugees since the start of the scheme in March 2022, more help is still needed to house newly arriving refugees and to rematch some of those already residing in the city.

Councillor James Lewis, Leader of Leeds City Council said: “I would like to wish all Ukrainians a happy Independence Day and to reaffirm our commitment to and solidarity with Ukraine and its people.

“I would also like to echo the sentiments expressed by Olga, Irina, and Olha in thanking the people of Leeds for opening their hearts and homes to those fleeing the dreadful and illegal war in Ukraine. I’m humbled by what we as a community have achieved in helping all people in need of refuge and hope to continue to support them for as long as needed.”

Leeds City Council’s executive member for communities, Councillor Mary Harland, said: “I wish a happy Independence Day to Ukraine and hope this is the last one they will have to suffer in the shadow of this devastating war.

“While the war in Ukraine has largely dropped from the news cycles, the fighting continues to increase in intensity with the suffering of the civilian population increasing as a result. As has become the tradition in Leeds, our kind-hearted people have responded magnificently to the needs of those seeking shelter, for which I am truly grateful.

“But more help is needed to house newly arriving refugees and to rematch some of the people already here. If you think you could become a host, please visit the Homes for Ukraine website.
