Leeds City Council has published an update on its five-year medium term financial strategy, outlining the severe difficulties it faces to deliver balanced budgets in the face of the continued need to make significant savings.

A number of Leeds’s libraries will see new opening hours following a public consultation. 

The consultation, which looked at how people use libraries across the city, aimed to find out how the services could help reduce the financial strain on the council.

As community hubs and libraries provide residents with valuable services, the consultation was undertaken to establish ways of saving money whilst impacting residents as little as possible. 

Final budget proposals to be discussed in February

A unique gift exchanged by two former Lord Mayors of Leeds more than 120 years ago could be about to help the city with unprecedented budget challenges.

The sale of the U1 number plate, used on the Lord Mayor’s civic vehicle, is currently being explored by Leeds City Council, with experts estimating it could fetch a substantial figure in a private sale.

Public consultation on Leeds City Council’s annual budget proposals to deliver an estimated further £58.4 million savings, alongside an additional £7.4 million of already agreed savings, in the next financial year has now begun.

Public consultation on Leeds City Council’s annual budget proposals to deliver an estimated £69.8million savings in the next financial year has now begun.

The Leader of Leeds City Council has called for “fundamental changes” as to how councils are funded after announcing budget proposals which require the delivery of £69.8million savings in the next financial year.
