In a civic ceremony attended by Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Sue Baker JP, on Friday (11th March 2022), the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr. Asghar Khan, and Leader of Leeds City Council, Cllr. James Lewis planted a young Acer Palmatum (Atropurpureum) tree at Golden Acre Park to mark Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The tree planted in Friday's ceremony will form a part of the Queen's Green Canopy, a unique tree planting initiative and a pillar of the forthcoming Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Individuals and groups across the country are encouraged to get involved in the Queen's Green Canopy initiative. With a focus on planting sustainably, the project aims to create a legacy in honour of The Queen's leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen's Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty's 70 years of service.

Speaking of the tree planting ceremony, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr. Asghar Khan said:

"Her Majesty the Queen has provided inspirational leadership for seventy years. Therefore, I cannot think of a better long-lasting legacy to her reign than bringing new life by planting thousands of new trees across the country.

"I look forward to seeing the tree planted today, flourish and grow, providing a sustainable and lasting tribute for future generations of Leeds people to enjoy."

Leader of Leeds City Council, Cllr. James Lewis added:

"The planting of trees for the Queen's Green Canopy initiative is an excellent way for everyone to get involved in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations while also doing something positive for the people of Leeds.

"I would therefore encourage anyone who wants to help create such a worthy and lasting legacy to mark Her Majesty the Queen's seventy years of service to get involved."
