A statement on the events in Israel and Gaza

Leeds City Council

The following is a joint statement by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Al Garthwaite, the Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor James Lewis, and chief executive, Tom Riordan on the developing situation in Israel and Gaza;

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this weekend’s horrific events. Our sincere and deep condolences go out to all families who have lost loved ones, and we know that many people in the city have been profoundly affected by the conflict.

“Leeds is a proud, multicultural city that works towards peace and harmony for all. As a symbol of peace and solidarity for communities who have been affected, we will be lighting our civic buildings in blue this evening, an internationally recognised symbol of peace.”

Notes for editors:

It was originally planned to light up civic buildings in Leeds in pink and blue on Monday (tonight) in recognition of Baby Loss Awareness Week, but this will now take place on Tuesday (tomorrow).
