Wheelie great lunch for Leeds school pupils

Pupils from a Leeds special school are setting taste buds tingling this month with their winning Tour de Yorkshire-themed school lunch, which is being served at schools across the city.

Sky Blue Class at the West Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre (SILC) Milestone site, produced the winning menu in the competition organised by Leeds City Council’s catering service ‘Catering Leeds’.

As well as seeing their menu become reality the winning pupils received vouchers to spend on school equipment and the whole school were treated to a bespoke active travel day delivered by the council’s Influencing Travel Behaviour team. The day was tailored especially for the winning school and featured Bikeability training, scooter skills and roller bikes.

The competition which was open to all primary schools and Specialist Inclusive Learning Centres earlier this year, asked pupils to design the specially themed menu to be served this month to coincide with the Tour de Yorkshire 2017.

The competition was designed not only to encourage more children to enjoy a healthy cooked school lunch but also to help promote physical activity, road safety and active travel within schools and has been supported by the council’s Influencing Travel Behaviour team and Welcome to Yorkshire.

The imaginative winning menu produced by Sky Blue Class consisted of:

  • Winner winner chicken dinner
  • A ‘wheelie’ good cheese pizza
  • Vegetable ‘medal’y
  • Pasta ‘finish line’
  • Apple pie-cycle

Councillor James Lewis executive member for resources and strategy said:

“Competitions like this are a fantastic way of increasing pupils’ interest and awareness in healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. It was great to meet Class Sky Blue and see their menu become reality, they put a lot of effort into coming up with such imaginative ideas and producing their poster.”
