Updates on cold weather disruption

Extreme weather Gritting Bin collections/waste services Warm spaces Schools

The Met Office have issued an amber warning for snow in Leeds from 15:00 today until 12:00 Friday. For more information on this please see the Met Office website.

The council’s gritting team has been working hard to keep our local roads clear. The gritting of our primary routes – around 800 miles of road – took place on Wednesday night, Thursday morning and again at 15.00 and  18.00 on Thursday. The team will remain on standby to respond to the situation as it develops overnight.

As snow continues to fall and temperatures remain low it is advised to plan ahead for disruption on roads if you are travelling today and tomorrow and consider if your journey is needed.

Council staff are working hard to maintain services, but there remains potential for impacts on some frontline council services on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. See below for a list of impacted services, which will be updated as the situation develops:

Household waste and recycling sites – Site safety for customers and staff is the priority and so it is possible that some of the more remote / high ground sites may close early on Thursday and some open late on Friday. All eight sites should be open as usual over the weekend.

Refuse collection - Our dedicated refuse staff have worked in difficult conditions to empty bins on Thursday and will do all they can to empty all the bins due for collection on Friday, but it is likely that some streets will not be safe to access. If your bin is not collected today or tomorrow as normal, further efforts will be made to collect them on Saturday.

Schools – several schools have reported changes to opening times. See this list for the latest information.

Community hubs and libraries - There may be a need to shut community hubs & libraries early today or change opening hours for Friday. Please check ahead before visiting, contact information can be found here.

Warm Spaces – please contact our Warm Spaces directly to check for any impact on their opening hours. Contact information for each Warm Space can be found on our Warm Spaces map.
