Thornbury Barracks roundabout improvements complete

A major road improvement scheme at Thornbury Barracks roundabout in Leeds is now complete.

The 10-month project has been carried out at the roundabout where the A647 meets the B6154 to improve access on the primary road link between Leeds and Bradford.

The £3.4million scheme has been designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve accessibility, road safety, bus journey time reliability and connectivity on one of the busiest road sections in the city.

The work which began in July 2014 was funded by Leeds City Council through the Department for Transport’s Local Pinch Point bidding process. The improvements carried out include: creating three lanes running through the middle of the roundabout in both main directions, traffic signals on all arms of the roundabout, reconfiguration of lanes, provision of pedestrian and cycling facilities, infill of the existing subway, upgrading of bus stops and street lighting improvements.

The final minor elements of the scheme in terms of road markings and new signage are now being put in place by contractor Colas Ltd.

Leeds City Council executive member for transport and economy Councillor Richard Lewis said:

“We are delighted that this improvement project at the Thornbury Barracks roundabout is now complete as it will make a major difference to access and safety on one of the key roads in the city connecting Leeds and Bradford.

“It has been a lengthy project to carry out so I would like to thank everyone for their patience and would ask for that to continue a little longer while the new road system settles down in the coming weeks.”

Colas Ltd Business Manager for Leeds Michael Holmes said:

“This project presented significant logistical obstacles that had to be overcome to ensure a safe and practical delivery whilst working in a high traffic environment on one of the major arterial routes between Leeds and Bradford.

“We would like to thank the Leeds City Council highway delivery team for their ongoing participation and assistance with traffic management planning and stakeholder liaison. We hope the new road layout provides a better motoring experience and safer pedestrian movements for those stakeholders affected.”
