The grow must go on as theatre launches magic beanstalk contest

A magical new panto-themed gardening challenge is set to be the stalk of the town for families across Leeds this summer.

Green-fingered locals are being asked to follow in the footsteps of storybook hero Jack and see how high they can grow their very own beanstalk as part of a fairy tale team-up between the Carriageworks Theatre and the city’s horticultural hub The Arium.

Launched in celebration of this year’s Christmas pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, one lucky grower will have the chance to win a family ticket to the festive extravaganza when it opens in November this year.

Visitors to The Arium can now purchase a Magic Bean Pack which includes everything needed to grow broad beans at home as well as giving them automatic entry into the prize draw.

Magic Bean Packs will be available to buy until May 31, and the winner will be selected in August.

Running from November 20, 2026 until January 3, 2027, The Carriageworks production of Jack and the Beanstalk will also see the return of the city’s panto legend Jez Edwards, who has been part of Christmas in Leeds for the past 16 years.

This week, Jez paid a visit to the Arium to get this summer’s contest officially underway.

He said: “This is a brilliant way to get families all across Leeds even more excited about the panto this year and play their part in what’s always a really special production while also getting hands on with nature and gardening.

“I can’t wait to see how high everyone can get their beanstalks to grow this summer and then welcome the lucky winners to The Carriageworks this Christmas to have a laugh and make some panto magic. Get growing everyone and good luck!”

The Carriageworks Theatre’s annual Christmas pantomime is one of the city’s favourite festive traditions, welcoming more than 300,000 thousand people since the theatre first opened its doors in 2005.

Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, said: “The Carriageworks panto always brings so many families together at Christmas, so it’s great that we’re taking the chance to get the city involved early this year with this fantastic summer competition.

“Teaming up with The Arium and giving people the opportunity to take part in a bit of gardening with a fairy tale twist is a fun way to get everyone into the panto spirit later in the year whilst also helping promote nature, sustainability and growing while the sun is shining.”
