Team spirit blooms after helping out in Leeds parks

Parks and countryside

A unique team building day became the perfect way for colleagues to bond and give back to the community, as Leeds City Council now offers green team away days in the city’s stunning parks.

Teams that book on will spend the day working hands-on in one of Leeds’ beautiful parks, woodlands, cemeteries and nature reserves, doing everything from tree planting to meadow management and habitat restoration.

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) team, who worked on the development of Morley station, recently took part in a special team building day at Morley Cemetery to give back to the community and learn from experts.

Working closely with staff from Leeds City Council throughout the day, the team trimmed back overgrown trees near graves, picked up litter and removed invasive young trees that were damaging the gravestones.

Councillor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment and green space, said: “The green team away days are a brilliant opportunity for teams to get to work together outside and help look after our treasured parks and green spaces whilst learning from our expert staff.

“The efforts from the TRU team were a big help in preserving the dignity and heritage of Morley cemetery, ensuring it remains a respectful and welcoming space for the community.”

Karl Wilson, from the Transpennine Route Upgrade, said: “Following the delivery of the new Morley Station as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, volunteering at the cemetery was a fantastic opportunity for Team TRU to give something back to the local community.

“Our colleagues really valued the chance to spend time caring for such an important local space, and we’re proud to continue playing a positive role in the area, not just through improved connectivity, but by supporting the communities we work alongside.

“A big thank you to the team at Leeds City Council who were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, making the day both enjoyable and meaningful.”

The team away day activity is professionally led and includes expert guidance, tools, training and refreshments, for £40 per person. Find out more at Green team away days | Leeds.gov.uk.
