Sixty new primary school places created for north Leeds

With the support of the head teachers, staff and governing bodies, Leeds City Council has secured an additional 60 reception class places for September 2017 at two north Leeds primary schools.

The places are required in order to address a shortage of reception places, due to birth rate increases and movement into the area of families with children of primary school age.

The new reception places agreed at Moor Allerton Hall and Allerton C of E primary schools will be ‘bulge’ cohorts of 30 places each for 2017. This means that the schools will both admit 90 children in reception class this year rather than the current 60, and these children will have a secure place at the schools through to year six.

The council’s school places planning team, alongside the Education Funding Agency and Roundhay Park Free School, are preparing to consult on a longer term solution for the demand for places in the area.

The additional places will be allocated in line with the published admissions policy for Leeds community and voluntary-controlled schools.

“We are very grateful to all of the schools across the city, like Moor Allerton Hall and Allerton C of E, which have been open to negotiations around taking extra pupils in both the long and short term. It is very pleasing that the learning community is working together with the local authority to ensure that we have enough good quality school places for children in city, to help us continue to tackle the increasing demand for school places in our growing city and in particular in this area of Leeds.”
