Adventurous children and adults with
disabilities can make some waves next week at Leeds Sailing and Activity
Centre.

The centre, based at Yeadon Tarn, will be
holding a disability open day on April 28, which will give visitors the chance
to use specially adapted equipment to try sailing and rafted canoeing.

And those attending can also try out the centre’s
unique artificial cave system, which is the only one of its kind in the
country.

Split over two levels, the indoor attraction allows people with and without
disabilities to try their hand at caving in a safe environment.

The
completely flat bottom level allows wheelchair users and those with limited
mobility to experience caving by using trolleys to propel themselves along.

Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive
member for digital and creative technologies, culture and skills
, said:

“The Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre is a
very special and unusual resource to find in such a big city and we’re
incredibly lucky to have it.

“The centre gives people of all ages and
abilities the chance to have a go at something different and fun in safe and
accessible environment as well as learning new skills and taking part in some great
physical activity.

“I hope next week’s event will mean more
people with disabilities will come and get out on the water. I’ve tried the cave
out for myself too and it’s a brilliant experience so I'd encourage as many people as
possible come along and see for themselves what the centre has to offer.”

The open day runs 1pm-5pm and individual
sessions are an hour long.

Each session costs £5 and all courses must be
pre-booked.

The centre is also offering Disability
Outdoor Activity Clubs every Tuesday between May 5 and July 21 from 4pm-5pm for
ages 8-16.
