Reminder about cost of living advice and support for winter
Leeds City Council is sharing a reminder of the support around for anyone struggling this winter.
A dedicated webpage showcasing the support available can be accessed at Together Leeds | Leeds.gov.uk, with links through to finance support for people struggling with utility bills and debt, how to stay healthy over winter, and how to access food support.
The council continues to work with voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations to provide a network of Welcome Spaces across Leeds throughout the winter. These opened on 1 December and include libraries, community centres, community hubs and other places that offer a warm, friendly and safe space as well as offering assistance to those seeking further help.
For those looking for support with obtaining winter coats, the Leeds Winter Coat Appeal collects and redistributes great quality, second-hand winter coats to people across Leeds for free, helping to save money and reduce waste.
There are 42 donation points and a list can be found here. For anyone who needs a free coat, a list of collection points can be found here.
Support for people at risk of homelessness or rough sleeping is also available. Visit How we can help | Leeds.gov.uk for advice and emergency assistance.
Anyone who has concerns for the welfare of a person sleeping rough in the city is asked to ring Leeds’ street outreach team on 0113 245 9445 or email Leeds.SOS@cgl.org.uk.
Councillor Asghar Khan, Leeds City Council’s executive member for communities, customer service and community safety, said: “We know that winter and the festive period can be challenging for many people, be that due to health issues, a lack of money or any other reason.
“There are Welcome Spaces open throughout winter across the city where people can go to enjoy a warm and friendly space for free.
“We want to assure everyone in Leeds that there is support available. Visiting our cost of living webpage at https://www.leeds.gov.uk/campaign/cost-of-living will give a great overview and help direct you to the support you need.”
