Public asked for their views on conservation area proposals for Nether Yeadon

Members of the public are being asked for their views on proposals to protect historic parts of Nether Yeadon.



Consultation has started on plans to introduce a conservation area around Gill Lane, Warm Lane and the older part of Henshaw, including the area around the Woolpack pub and St John’s Church.



The proposals aim to safeguard the semi-rural character, local architectural history and early industrial features of the area.



Buildings within a conservation area are protected from unauthorised demolition.



Any new developments in the area also have to meet higher standards of design than elsewhere.



Permission from the council is also needed for certain activities such as tree felling.



A conservation area appraisal and management plan has been produced and members of the public are being asked for comments.



The draft appraisal document will be available on-line throughout the consultation, at: www.leeds.gov.uk/conservation.



Copies will also be held at Rawdon Community Library for public viewing.



A public meeting and drop-in session will also be held with a Leeds City Council conservation officer, taking place at St John’s Church Hall in Henshaw on Monday, February 16.



The meeting will begin at 7pm when a presentation will be made about the work.



A question and answer session will follow, with a more informal drop-in session from 7.45pm until 9pm.



Councillor Peter Gruen, Leeds City Council's executive member for neighbourhoods, planning and personnel, said:



“It’s important that we gather the views of local residents- the people who know the area best- as we consult on plans for this conservation area.



“The proposals would help us to protect the heritage and character of an important and historic part of Leeds and we’re keen to hear what local people think.”



The proposals have also been supported by the Outer North West area committee and money has been allocated from the local wellbeing fund.



Once the consultation has been completed on March 9, it is anticipated that the final proposals will be taken to the to planning board for approval later that month.
