Passenger lands flytipping fine

A south Leeds man has been fined for flytipping after returning from a trip abroad.



Omand Obama Essama, Harlech Road, Beeston, was fined £200, ordered to pay £100 costs and a £20 victim surcharge at Leeds Magistrates Court last week (22 January).



A council street cleaning crew found bags of waste dumped on Harlech Road back in November 2013. Using evidence found in the bags, officers were able to link the abandoned rubbish to Essama. Despite being summoned to court to account for his grime crime, Essama failed to attend twice.



A warrant was issued for Essama’s arrest and he was detained at Manchester Airport last year on returning from a trip abroad.



Councillor Mark Dobson, executive member for cleaner, stronger and safer communities, said:



“We can’t and won’t tolerate flytipping in any form. Would-be flytippers should know by now that it’s simply not acceptable and we will always seek prosecute to hammer that message home.”
