Object of the week- Reclining by Dan Crooks
Inspired by world-famous Yorkshire sculptor Henry Moore, this eye-catching creation is going on display at Leeds City Museum as part of an innovative arts project.
Reclining, by Dan Crooks will be at Leeds City Museum from today (Tues 28) as part of their Window Frame art project, which gives artists, young people’s groups and community groups based in Yorkshire the chance to exhibit their artwork in the two window frames at the museum’s entrance.
The self-standing structure also has wheels on the base wheels and base play a part to emphasise a state of flux and suggest movement.
Originally from Sheffield, Dan Crooks graduated in 2015 with a BA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths University of London and has lived in Leeds, London and Huddersfield.
Speaking about Reclining, he said: “I wanted to create a very minimal and abstract figurative sculpture - reducing the figurative form to a bare linear representation. My main inspiration was Henry Moore and how Moore approached the figure, in particular his nude studies and sculptures.
“I wanted to modernise the traditional bronze by challenging the form and approach the viewer would normally take to engage with large bronze sculpture.”
The Window Frame project welcomes proposals from artists and groups working in all types of contemporary visual arts including photography, new media, fine art, craft, design and interdisciplinary practices.
Councillor Brian Selby, Leeds City Council’s lead member for museums and galleries, said: “This impressive sculpture is an eye-catching addition to the museum which I’m sure will interest and inspire visitors.
“The Window Frame project is also a fabulous opportunity for local artists and community groups to see their work on show in a prominent location and I’ll look forward to seeing more exciting work go on display in future.”
