Newlay Bridge closure lifted early

Good weather conditions have enabled contractors doing repairs to Newlay Bridge to complete work that needed its closure a day ahead of schedule, allowing its immediate re-opening.

A further full closure of the bridge was originally scheduled for two days this week after complications arose with the current ongoing maintenance project..

The Grade ll* listed bridge over the River Aire between Pollard Lane and Newlay Lane is undergoing work to improve and protect its condition.  A full closure was scheduled for today (Fri Aug 31st) and tomorrow (Sat Sept 1), for the application of a new deck surface and waterproofing. 

An extra day's closure had been planned in case wet weather inhibited the drying of the waterproofing, but the sunny conditions meant this was no longer necessary and once it was dry the bridge was re-opened.

Built by John Polland in 1819, Newlay Bridge will celebrate its bi-centennial anniversary in March next year. Featuring arched cast iron ribs and bracings, it is considered one of the oldest iron bridges in Yorkshire.

The project, which also includes cleaning the stone decking and reinstating the existing stone setts on the surface, will preserve the bridge from corrosion and is expected to be completed by mid-October.
