New Year message from Leeds City Council leader Councillor Judith Blake

Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Judith Blake said:

“As we head into 2016 we know we are going to have even harder financial challenges to meet this year with less government funding and difficulties in our health and social care budgets.

"With demand pressures on public services continuing to rise, we will do all we can to minimise the impact of funding cuts on our most vulnerable residents.

"Despite that significant ongoing challenge, as a city Leeds enjoyed an impressive 2015 with our economy continuing to grow and deliver new jobs, and our reputation as an international city to visit and do business was underlined by hosting events like the MOBOs and attracting major investment from world-leading brands like Burberry and Vastint in the South Bank and from China in Thorpe Park.

“We look forward to this growth and success continuing over the next 12 months with highlights to come including the opening of Victoria Gate and John Lewis in the city centre, the completed refurbishment of Leeds Kirkgate Market as well as hosting the Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds and the Tour de Yorkshire. So while things undoubtedly remain tough there is also a lot to look forward to in 2016.”
