New statistics show Leeds is top city for walking
New evidence from the Department for Transport has shown Leeds is the country’s top city for increased walking.
Latest statistics show there was a 15 per cent jump in the proportion of people walking at least five times a week in the Leeds, putting the city just behind Cambridge in the national figures.
The figures follow hot on the heels of Leeds first festival of walking Walk Leeds, which was opened by renowned rambler Janet Street Porter.
Councillor Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council, said:
“I’m delighted to hear this news. We want Leeds to be a healthy and well-connected city, and the latest figures show we are making good progress. There’s lots more to be done, and I look forward to seeing the benefits of the excellent work being done to link organisations across the city to bring the benefits of walking and cycling to as many people as possible.
Councillor Lisa Mulherin, chair of the Leeds Health and Wellbeing Board, said:
“These figures are great news. We know walking can make people healthier, and it endorses the efforts we have made as a city to encourage walking and cycling too. I was delighted that the Walk Leeds festival was received so well and the efforts put in by local Ramblers Association members was really good to see. The further initiatives, such as City Connect Walking and the Cycle super highway, as well as SkyRide, can play a part in helping us all stay healthier and enjoy active lifestyles.”
John Kilner, Living Streets’ Leeds and Bradford project manager, said:
“Walking is the cheapest, simplest and one of the most effective forms of exercise. Walking for just 20 minutes a day can transform fitness levels, improve health and reduce stress and anxiety and we know we’re making good progress through the success of our social rewards scheme.”
