More homes to receive brown bin collections

Garden waste collections are being rolled out to thousands more properties across Leeds.



Residents in up to 7,000 suitable properties will shortly receive a letter confirming that the brown bin service will be available in their area.



Residents can opt out of the service if they believe it is not right for them.



The bins are collected every two weeks between March and end of November when the service ceases for the winter.



Grass cuttings, weeds, hedge trimmings, flowers, twigs, leaves and plants from brown bins are sent to local facilities to be turned into compost.



Councillor Mark Dobson, executive board member for cleaner, stronger and safer communities, said:



“If we want to meet our recycling targets then our services must match people’s appetite to reduce, reuse and recycle.



“With more homes on our brown bin service we can stop what would otherwise be a useful resource going to waste in landfill.



”We have nearly 200,000 homes with a brown bin now. We know that there are more people wanting to join the service, and we’re trying to expand the service wherever we can.”
