Lord Mayor welcomes West Indies cricket team to Leeds

The Lord Mayor of Leeds has hosted a special civic reception in honour of the touring West Indies cricket team.

The team were special guests of the Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Jane Dowson at Leeds Civic Hall this week. This was ahead of the Second Investec Test match against England at Headingley, which starts on Friday (25 August).

Guests at the reception also included representatives from Yorkshire County Cricket Club and from local cricket clubs across Leeds. The visit and Test Match coincided with the week of celebrations for the 50th West Indian Carnival, which takes place this Monday 28 August at Potternewton Park.

Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Jane Dowson said:

“Leeds has a large and vibrant West Indian community and it was fantastic therefore to be able to offer both a civic welcome and reception to the touring West Indies cricket team at the civic hall this week. It was also brilliant for players from local clubs in the city to attend and meet members of the international team, which I am sure is something that will last long in the memory. This evening forms part of the build-up to the 50th West Indian Carnival celebrating Caribbean culture, which as always, will offer those in attendance, a tremendous feast of colour and entertainment.”
