Lord Mayor’s Just One Day’ charity appeal hits the heights once again

It was another 24 hours to remember as local residents, businesses, schools, community groups and organisations joined forces across the city to raise money for the Lord Mayor’s ‘Just One Day’ charity appeal.

As part of ‘Just One Day’, which this year was held on Friday 1 April, all proceeds from the many fundraising activities and events that were held will be given to the Lord Mayor Councillor Judith Chapman’s chosen charity, Specialist Autism Services. Whether it was deciding to wear fancy dress to work or school, organising a sponsored event, face painting, or even holding a best joke or spelling competition, nothing was off limits as people of all ages gave up their time to help raise money for the appeal.

The Lord Mayor started her exciting and very busy day by visiting Leeds West Academy who raised around £1000 and Grimes Dyke Primary School to say a big thank you to pupils and staff who over the last few months have worked very hard to support ‘Just One Day’.

Following the whistle stop tour, the Lord Mayor was back at Leeds Civic Hall as part of a World Autism Awareness Day event to insert the final brick in her massive charity attempt to build a gigantic city crest made entirely out of Lego. Made up of a mammoth 200704 bricks including 26 different colours of which only one is violet, plans are now being put in place to see where the mosaic can be displayed in the future.

To round off the day, the Lord Mayor then joined an expectant crowd on Millennium Square as many brave souls made a sizzling 15 foot barefoot journey in temperatures reaching over 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, as part of a very special fire walk event.

“It was a truly unforgettable day, and it was lovely to be able to visit pupils and staff at two of our city schools who have done so much to support the appeal, before we were able to put the final brick in to complete our giant city crest made entirely out of Lego and then host on Millennium Square a fire walk!

“Now that the Leeds Lego Crest is completed, we want to give it a new home where the public can both see and enjoy it on a regular basis. Please keep your eye out for an announcement very soon on how you might be able to display the Leeds Lego Crest in the future.”
