Leeds’ unsung heroes to be recognised at Compassionate City Awards this week

Unsung heroes in Leeds will be recognised for their amazing contribution to the city at the Compassionate City Awards on Thursday 22 November 2018.

Held at Leeds Civic Hall, the Compassionate City Awards are a celebration of the city’s many unsung heroes. The awards will celebrate the positive work that individuals, community groups and organisations do every day to make their local communities and our city a great place to live, work and visit.

The important work that these individuals and organisations do helps to improve the lives of the people of Leeds and supports the vision for our city to be the best city the UK.

Similarly to last year, there will be an award named in memory of Jo Cox. The Jo Cox award will be given to an individual or organisation who has gone above and beyond to unite and bring different communities together in Leeds.

There are seven award categories in total which are all individually sponsored by businesses and organisations from in and around Leeds.

The award sponsors this year are Leeds City College, Strategic Team Group, Leeds Rhinos Foundation, Dawson Group Sweepers PLC, Tunstall Healthcare (UK) and John Rodriguez Plastering Ltd.

Councillor Debra Coupar, Leeds City Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Communities said:

“The Compassionate City Awards are a fantastic way of recognising our city’s many unsung heroes. There are countless individuals and organisations in Leeds who regularly go above and beyond for their local communities and it’s this work that really helps to make Leeds the best place to live and work.

I would like to offer my congratulations to all the nominees. It’s fantastic that we have the opportunity as a city to pass on our thanks for all their tremendous efforts.”

An individual or organisation who have gone above and beyond to unite and bring different communities together, supported newer communities to feel welcome into their communities and championed specific issues which help to create more cohesive and integrated communities.

Unsung Hero of the Year

Sponsored by Strategic Team Group

An individual who has made a positive impact in their community, who works tirelessly to support other people or groups and shows passion to help others. Examples could be outstanding fundraising efforts, developing a new project or service or increasing membership of a community group.

Young Person of the Year

Sponsored by Leeds Rhinos Foundation

A young person who has had a significant impact on others through activities , such as, working with voluntary groups, school activities, youth clubs, uniformed groups or as a carer to help others.

Community Project or Organisation of the Year

Sponsored by Strategic Team Group

A project which has resulted in real benefits for its local community and service users. Examples could be environmental initiatives, community safety activities, community integration projects, intergenerational work or tackling social isolation.

Cultural or Art Project of the Year

Sponsored by Dawson Sweepers PLC

A project or organisation which works with communities to celebrate the diverse cultural landscape of our city through a range of activities, such as, dance, music, art or sport.

Health and Well Being Award

Sponsored by Tunstall Healthcare (UK)

A project, organisation or individual which makes a positive contribution to improving health and wellbeing in the city.

Woman of the Year

This award has been introduced to recognise that 2018 is the 100th anniversary of votes for women. This award is for an individual or group of women who have contributed to improving outcomes and opportunities for women in the city.
