‘Leeds Girls Can’ set to take over Leeds Dock as part of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day will once again be celebrated in person as part of the city’s successful ‘Leeds Girl Can’ initiative this Saturday (March 5), with the event running from 12pm to 3pm.

Taking over the Royal Armouries Square by Leeds Dock, the event will include a wide range of activities designed to get women of all ages moving.

From mother and baby yoga or a a five km fun run to a history walk, the wide range of activities on offer, cater to all ages and fitness levels. All events are also completely free and ticketless so that everyone can get involved.

Supporting the event on the day and offering a wealth of advice and support will be ambassadors from the successful Leeds Girls Can initiative. Over 400 women are currently taking part in Leeds Girls Can activities across the city, with 73% of those participating, identifying themselves as inactive before enrolling.

As part of the celebrations local female artist Molly Pukes has been commissioned to design a tote bag in celebration of the event, with a 100 set to be given away on the day.

Councillor Salma Arif, executive member for public health and active lifestyles, said:

“It is amazing to see Leeds Girls Can return to in person events, to mark International Women’s Day at Leeds Dock and I am looking forward to a great turnout for all the activities.

“We want to encourage people of all ages and experience to enjoy sport and exercise, and the wide range of activities should mean everyone attending is encouraged to get moving. It is really pleasing that Leeds City Council is able to facilitate this event free of charge as part of the welcome back fund.”
