Leeds City Council response to House of Lords report into the economic case for HS2

Response from Leeds City Council Leader to House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee report into the case for HS2:

Councillor Keith Wakefield, Leader of Leeds City Council, said:

‘I am disappointed to see the House of Lords economic affairs committee take a negative stance on HS2. There is compelling evidence, as outlined in the Higgins Report, that this much needed investment in transport infrastructure will not only play a key role in rebalancing the UK economy, but is also vital in unlocking the enormous potential in Leeds, the city region and across the North and Midlands.

“The current proposal for HS2 is an essential element of the connectivity packages outlined in last week’s Transport for the North strategy, and we welcome the suggestion in that document and this committee report that building HS2 from the north first would make strong economic sense.”
