Leeds brown bin service springing back into action

Bin collections/waste services

Service resumes from 23 March

The brown bin garden waste collection service restarts in Leeds next week.

After its winter break, the service resumes as a sign of spring’s arrival from Monday 23 March for all residents who receive a brown bin collection.

All bin collection dates can be seen at https://www.leeds.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/check-your-bin-day, while helpful reminders can be sent to any smartphone by downloading the popular Leeds Bins app.

The service is provided at no extra charge by Leeds City Council, unlike in other areas, to assist households in managing their garden waste and to reduce the amount of garden waste going in the black bin.

Larger amounts of garden waste or any excess garden waste can be taken for free to any of the council’s eight household waste and recycling centres, all of which are open all-year round, seven days a week. Details for these can be seen at https://www.leeds.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/recycling-sites.

Those with gardens or greenspace are also encouraged to consider other environmentally beneficial ways to use or dispose of garden waste. These include leaving grass cuttings on lawns, reusing garden waste by composting or creating piles for insects, birds and other local wildlife, which will help both the eco-system and the garden itself. More information on composting and to see specially-discounted composters visit https://getcomposting.com/.

Leeds City Council delivers the largest garden waste collection service by any council in the UK, annually collecting around 30,000 tonnes of garden waste from over 220,000 households across the city. Garden waste collected by the council is composted locally and across the region. The material is used in farming, horticulture and local land restoration projects.

Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment and green space, Councillor Mohammed Rafique said:

“We are very pleased to have the garden waste brown bin collection service restarting in Leeds next week. We are proud that it continues to be the largest garden waste collection service of any council in the UK offered at no charge, and would encourage all residents, households and communities to do what they can to make Leeds as environmentally friendly as possible.”
