Launch of the Our Spaces Strategy celebrated with new street art!

A number of new pieces of art work have begun appearing across the city to celebrate the final launch of the Our Spaces Strategy.

The strategy, which was officially launched earlier this year, sets out how public spaces across the city will be developed to be vibrant and inclusive. It is a call to action to ensure that the creation of green infrastructure is at the forefront of all new development proposals being brought forward and to ensure that the delivery of new and improved public realm meets the council and the city’s vision for the creation of world-class and inclusive spaces that can improve the health and well-being of the city centre and all the people who use it.

Working with local artists, media boxes across the city, including locations outside Kirkgate Market, will be transformed into bright and colourful art pieces, each representing one of the 7 key principles of the strategy. These include people first, greener future, better connected, everyone welcome, bring it to life, economic sense and this is Leeds.

Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Judith Blake said: 

“Through Our Spaces Strategy, we have set out our vision to transform and create world-class and inclusive areas in the public realm across Leeds, ensuring they can directly contribute to an improvement in the health and well-being of our residents. 

“The installation of these new pieces of art work across the city are a fantastic and vibrant way in which to set out the key seven principles of our strategy, which is underpinned by our commitment to transform how Leeds looks and feels as we seek to make Leeds carbon neutral by 2030. 

“We cannot do this alone and to make this aim a reality we will need the help of the people of Leeds, and also the support of both the public and private sectors in ensuring that green infrastructure is at the heart of all new development proposals moving forward.”

A visual map has been designed to help families and citizens discover these art works as they are completed as well as an online copy of the strategy for everyone to access. This is also available on the Our Spaces website, currently undergoing development- https://www.leedsourspaces.co.uk/ Once completed, the website will show the current and future projects across the city and will allow people to share their experiences within these places.
