Joint statement issued by Leeds City Council and the GMB Union

Leeds City Council and the GMB Union have reached an agreement for the settlement of specific elements of equal pay claims that the GMB brought on behalf of their members. This agreement reflects constructive dialogue and a shared commitment to equality and to resolving matters in a fair and timely manner.

The settlement was agreed in relation to specific elements of the claims that were brought. This agreement is only in relation to those elements, and talks will continue in the new year about the remaining elements of the claims, which have different legal grounds and are more complex. As such, it is important that we take the necessary time to fully understand the implications before reaching any conclusions.

GMB Senior Organiser Desiree Johnston said:

"This agreement represents meaningful progress for our members and shows what can be achieved when both sides engage in genuine dialogue. While there is more work to do, this step demonstrates our shared commitment to ensuring fairness and equality for all council workers in Leeds. We look forward to continuing constructive discussions in the new year to resolve the outstanding issues."

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said:

"We are pleased to have reached this stage of agreement with the GMB. We value the positive and collaborative approach that has been taken, and we remain committed to working through the remaining issues carefully and transparently. Ensuring fairness and equality across our workforce is a priority for the council, and we will continue to engage constructively as discussions progress."

Both parties remain committed to open and transparent discussions as they move forward.
