International education expert to bring Visible Learning to Leeds

Leaders in education from across Yorkshire and the Humber are being invited to learn from one of the world's most acclaimed education experts at a conference in Leeds later this year.

Internationally acclaimed education researcher, Professor John Hattie, will be bringing his Visible Learning theory to the Royal Armouries in Leeds on Thursday 5 May.

The conference is suitable for head teachers, senior leaders, school governors and teachers from all phases of education and delegates will be able to select which talks and workshops they attend so the day best meets their needs.

Professor John Hattie who is a director of the research institute at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, will explain his research findings and outline how lessons from Visible Learning can be applied to all students, teachers and schools every day of the week.

Practical workshops throughout the day will allow delegates to delve deeper into the research and through real life, school based, case studies experience the Visible Learning approach in action.

Professor John Hattie said:

“Visible teaching and learning occurs when learning is the explicit goal, when it is appropriately challenging, when the teacher and student both seek to ascertain whether and to what degree the challenging goal is attained, when there is deliberate practice aimed at attaining mastery of the goal, when there is feedback given and sought, and when teachers become learners of their own teaching, and when students become their own teachers.”

Delegates will be able to hear two keynote speeches from Professor Hattie himself, firstly focusing on his research findings, what has the greatest impact on learning and how to apply these research methods back in the classroom, as well as a session on the nine key and essential mind-frames needed to produce deep changes within schools.

The day will also include a choice of workshops for delegates that range from sessions from academics such as Professor Rob Coe, Durham University, author of ‘What makes great teaching?’ and part of the team working with the Sutton Trust to create the ‘Teaching and Learning Toolkit’ to practical sessions delivered by head teachers who have used the ‘Visible Learning’ approach to transform achievement at their schools.

Visible Learning is the result of over 25 years of research by Professor John Hattie, studying the influences on achievement for over 240 million students worldwide to identify what has the greatest impact on learning outcomes. John has written 14 books, is a director of the research institute at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education and is recognised worldwide as the master of uncovering the effective strategies for teaching and learning.
