Hip Hop history is back at Leeds City Museum

Music-lovers will get a lesson in Hip Hop history this weekend during a free event at Leeds City Museum.

Taking place this Saturday, November 14, the event will celebrate 41 years of Hip Hop culture and 42 years of the Universal Zulu Nation, the founding family of Hip Hop culture, formed by legendary artist Afrika Bambaataa.

This weekend’s event follows on from last year’s successful celebration, which attracted almost 3,000 people.

As well as live performances from local and national artists including Donald D, Dynamax (Ice T’s Rhyme Syndicate), DJ Supreme (Hijack), Ithunder & D.M.W, DJ Rasp, Kaos Krew and Testament, the museum will also host some exciting workshops and DJ sets.

And one of the highlights of the all-day event will be a question and answer panel with English rapper, poet, and journalist Akala, and Talib Kweli an American Hip Hop recording artist from Brooklyn, New York.

Marek Romaniszyn Leeds Museums and Galleries assistant curator of community history, who has been helping to put the event together, said:

“This weekend will be a great opportunity to celebrate and learn about one of the most influential music and cultural movements of the last four decades.

“Hip Hop has permeated so many aspects of our society, so it’s important that we recognise the impact it’s had and give those with an interest and passion for Hip Hop a chance to learn more and pick up some tips from those who have paved the way.”

Saturday’s Hip Hop history celebration takes place at the museum from 11am until 4pm and is free for all ages.

Councillor Brian Selby, Leeds City Council’s lead member for museums and galleries, said:

“Hosting vibrant events like this at the museum is a reminder that history and culture are not just about looking back to the ancient world, they’re also about celebrating things like Hip Hop and music which have made a deep and lasting impression on modern society.

“By doing that, we can engage a whole new generation and help them to learn about culture in a new, fun and exciting way.”
