Fly tippers fined as council crackdown continues

Fines totalling more than £2,500 have been imposed as Leeds City Council continues its campaign against waste crime.

The council has pledged to target offenders continuing to fly tip throughout Leeds.

The latest prosecutions saw action taken against a motor company and a private resident.

In the first case, SMW Motors, based in Harehills, Leeds, pleaded guilty to dumping waste on Richardshaw Road and Harehills Road. The company was fined a total of £2,381 for breaching its duty of care under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Meanwhile, the council’s Environmental Enforcement Officers found a pile of waste on Priesthorpe Road, Farsley. Evidence gathered led them to an address in Bramley occupied by Andrew Leefe and his partner. Leefe was prosecuted for fly tipping under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and fined £250.

The two cases come just days after Leeds businessman Jerome O’Malley – who operates the Airport Car Boot Sale in Yeadon - was fined almost £11,000 after a fire which sent a plume of dense black smoke across the skies near Leeds Bradford Airport.

Councillor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Active Lifestyles, said:

“We do not tolerate any form of waste crime and perpetrators will be pursued with legal action.”

“Anyone found fly tipping will face prosecution and a fine as it blights our communities and costs the taxpayer through clean-up costs.”

“We will continue our firm stance in a bid to keep Leeds a clean and safe place to live in, visit and work.”
