Exam results celebrations for Leeds GCSE students

Young people across Leeds are celebrating their GCSE results today (Thursday 22 August).

Year 11 pupils in the city are receiving their results, with early signs suggesting another year of significant success for the city.

The vast majority of GCSEs are now graded on a 1-9 scale. Grade 9 is the highest grade and is set above the old A* in exams which are different in content, structure and assessment following reforms in 2016. A Grade 5 is a strong pass and is equivalent to a high C and low B on the old grading system.

Leeds City Council is still collecting results from across the city, but provisional results so far suggest that there has been an increase in the proportion of young people in Leeds achieving the strong pass in English and maths, with some schools reporting marked improvements.

Leeds City Council executive member for learning, skills and employment Councillor Jonathan Pryor said:

“Congratulations and well done to everyone who has taken their GCSEs this year for these results and the hard work that went into achieving them. They have done themselves and the city proud, which is a great reflection not only on themselves but also their families, schools, colleges and other learning settings for supporting them to secure these results.

“For those young people still considering their future options, support, advice and guidance is available from their school and also at the drop-in Next Steps event being held at Kirkgate Market next week. I would like to wish all our young people all the very best for their futures.”

Students who did not get the GCSE results they were hoping for, or are still considering their options, are being invited to attend a Next Steps event at Leeds Kirkgate Market next Thursday (29 August) between 11am to 2pm.

Organised by Leeds City Council in partnership with post-16 learning providers, students will be able to find out what options are available to them at sixth forms and colleges across the city as well as information about apprenticeships and traineeships at the drop-in event.
