Cute new arrival marks the beginning of 2018 at Home Farm
A popular farm in Leeds received a New Year’s present to treasure this week following the arrival of a new bull calf.
Traditional Hereford Cow ‘Lettuce’ gave birth earlier than expected on the morning of New Year’s Day to Home Farm’s newest recruit. The male, who has yet to be named, is already learning to walk and feed himself under the watchful eye of his mum. Visitors can now see how Home Farm’s first bull calf of 2018 is progressing in the cattle yards.
Home Farm has kept traditional Hereford cows since 2013 and they have proved to be ideal in helping to support the grazing of pastures at Temple Newsam. The Herefords are currently listed as a minority rare breed by the Rare Breed Survival Trust watch list, with numbers currently less than 1500 in the UK.
A big hit with families, Home Farm boasts over 400 sheep, pigs, poultry and goats, along with an interesting mixture of recreated workshops and exhibitions.
Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for the environment and sustainability, said:
“We were delighted to welcome our first new arrival of 2018 to Home Farm on the morning of New Year’s Day, and I’m really happy to say that both mother and bull calf are in great health and doing very well.
“With so many wonderful animals to see and also a range of workshops and exhibitions on offer throughout the year, Home Farm continues to be a wonderful place for all the family to visit.”
