Councillor Harland awarded MBE in New Year Honours
Councillor Mary Harland has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the New Year Honours.
Councillor Harland has been awarded the honour in recognition of her political service as a councillor serving the Kippax and Methley ward and as Leeds City Council’s executive member for housing.
Cllr Harland has previously held the executive board portfolio of communities, customer service and community safety, and has served as a Labour councillor in Kippax and Methley since 2012.
Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer congratulated Cllr Harland on her award, describing her ‘remarkable contribution’ as a councillor and executive board member. In his letter to Cllr Harland, Sir Kier wrote ‘your dedication and service have made a lasting impact to your local community, and your commitment to excellence embodies the very spirit of the honours system’.
Cllr Harland said: “It is really lovely to receive such an honour and I am delighted to do so. At the same time it is incredibly humbling, because you only have to look all around the council chamber to see so many colleagues who devote their lives to public service and serving our city and residents.”
Two former Leeds City Council employees have also been named in this year’s New Year Honours list.
Gail Faulkner has been awarded an OBE for her work within children’s social work service as former head consultant of Leeds Relational Practice Centre at Leeds City Council, and George Munson has been awarded an MBE for services to net zero and the heat network centre, as former energy and climate change manager at Leeds City Council.
Councillor James Lewis, Leader of Leeds City Council, said: “It is hugely inspiring to see those who have worked to make a difference across Leeds and beyond being honoured.
“Councillor Harland works tirelessly to improve the lives of people throughout the villages in Kippax and Methley ward, and across our city.
“No-one is more deserving of such an award and I am delighted to see a great friend and colleague receive such wonderful recognition of the great dedication she shows in her role every single day.
“Congratulations to all of those across the city who have received such well-deserved accolades.”
