Leeds City Council has been named one of the most inclusive employers in Britain as well as being honoured for its work supporting LGBTQ+ children, young people and families across the city.

The council has once again secured a spot in Stonewall’s Top 100 list for leading LGBTQ+ inclusive employers, securing a Gold Employer award.

The annual ‘Workplace Equality Index’ (WEI) showcases employers who have demonstrated their commitment to LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion, with the council praised for creating an environment where LGBTQ+ employees feel they can be their best.

The council’s children and families service has also secured a gold ‘Children and Young People Services (CYPS) Champions’ award from Stonewall, in recognition of the variety of work being done across the directorate to support LGBTQ+ children and young people.

Councillor Fiona Venner, executive member for equality, health & wellbeing, said: “We are proud to once again be recognised in the WEI index for creating a workplace which is inclusive for everyone.

“We want everyone to feel they can come to work and be themselves completely and we will continue to do all we can to remain at the forefront of LGBTQ+ inclusivity for our staff and the people of Leeds.

“To also receive a Children and Young People Services (CYPS) Champions gold award is a fantastic achievement and further demonstrates our commitment to all in the LGBTQ+ community.

“It’s so important that LGBTQ+ children and young people feel able to grow in a safe and inclusive environment and this award recognises the dedication of our teams in supporting and serving the needs of all young people in Leeds.”

Colin Macfarlane, Director of Programmes and Income at Stonewall (he/him) said: “Implementing inclusive practices and policies is vital for employers who wish to attract and retain top LGBTQ+ talent.

“The Workplace Equality Index draws participants from diverse industries and sectors, all of whom understand that inclusivity is the future and are leading the way in this vital change."

Commenting on Leeds City Council’s gold ‘Children and Young People Services (CYPS) Champions’ award, Robbie de Santos, Director of Campaigns and Human Rights at Stonewall (he/him), added: “Leeds City Council has worked hard to put LGBTQ+ inclusion at the heart of all that they do.

“We know how crucial it can be for LGBTQ+ children and young people to have services they can turn to when they are in need.

“This award recognises Leeds City Council’s efforts and commitment to making the world a better place for all LGBTQ+ children and young people."
