The Ice Cube at Millennium Square
Leeds will be supporting national Disabled
Access Day this week as the city prepares to welcome The Ice Cube back to
Millennium Square.
The popular ice rink attraction returns to
the square on Friday, January 23 until Sunday, February 22, 2015.
The Ice Cube provides a real ice rink and a smaller
nursery rink for budding skaters under eight years old.
As well as the standard public sessions,
dedicated accessible skating sessions will be provided every Thursday between
9am and 10am.
Other skating sessions are also accessible to all, including wheelchair
users, and customers can call in advance if they want to check how busy sessions
are on the day or discuss any additional requirements or concerns.
And for the first time this year, every day
from Saturday 24 January to Sunday 22 February, Leeds City Councils Mobile
Changing Places toilet (High Dependency Unit) will also be available at the Ice
Cube.
This unit will be provided in addition to the
standard disabled persons toilets on Millennium Square, and provides a
peninsular style toilet and associated grab rails (ideal for assisted use), an
adult size changing bed, a height adjustable wash hand basin, a tracking hoist
(slings not provided) and plenty of space.
Disabled skaters can buy tickets at the
concessionary rate of £6.50, and free admission is available for one companion
per disabled skater (at both public and accessible sessions). Please let us
know when you book if you would like to make use of this facility.
The dedicated sessions and Changing Places
facility will follow Disabled Access Day, which takes place this Saturday.
The day aims to encourage people with a
disability to get out and visit somewhere they have never been before.
Disabled people are encouraged to come and
try The Ice Cube after its grand opening on January 23.
Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for
digital and creative technologies, culture and skills, said:
“The Ice Cube is one of our most popular and
fun attractions and we want to make sure that people of all ages and abilities
can come along and have a go.
“It’s important to us that Leeds is
recognised as a city where having a disability is not a boundary to getting out
and enjoying yourself.
“Disabled Access Day is a great way of
helping us to get that message across and I look forward to welcoming everyone
to the most inclusive Ice Cube we have ever hosted.”
