Chance for artists to create the light fantastic

Innovative artists are being given a unique opportunity to produce a spectacular new light and sound display for one of city’s biggest cultural showpieces.

Organisers of this year’s highly-anticipated Light Night Leeds are calling for creative ideas for an ambitious video mapping piece, which will be projected onto Leeds Civic Hall in front of huge crowds at the annual arts spectacular.

Taking place on October 5 and 6, the theme for this year’s event will be People and the City, with imaginative light installations across the city centre reflecting Leeds’s history, communities and people.

Set to be the centrepiece of the 2017 festival, applications are now open for the Leeds Civic Hall projection, which could include anything from different people’s experiences of living and working in the city to prominent figures from Leeds’s past and present.

This year’s projection will follow in the footsteps of 2013’s incredible clockwork creation Momentous, 2014’s pulsating Theatre of Illumination and last year’s mesmerising Phoenix in the Stone.

Created by brothers Rob and Matt Vale and their company Illuminos, Phoenix in the Stone focussed on the captivating flight of a gigantic mythical bird, representing the four elemental forces.

The hugely-successful 2016 event attracted an estimated 80,000 people into the city centre over two nights.

Now in its 13^th year, this October’s Light Night will feature more than 40 innovative artworks, including light projections, film, dance, music, theatre and street performances, giving visitors a chance to explore prominent city centre landmarks in a completely different way.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “Each year Light Night becomes bigger, better and more imaginative, with tens of thousands of people and families coming into the city centre for an unforgettable collective experience.

“This incredible event is also a shining example of the unique capacity which culture has to bring people together and the integral role it plays in life in Leeds. We’re very proud to be a city that embraces creativity and artistic innovation and Light Night is a perfect celebration of that passion as well as the outstanding talent of the arts community.

“In previous years, the Leeds Civic Hall projection has been nothing short of sensational, captivating the crowds on Millennium Square and giving us all some unforgettable memories and I’m sure this year will be no exception.”

Light Night is organised by Leeds City Council’s arts development team and is supported by Arts Council England and LeedsBID (Business Improvement District).

Submissions for this year’s Leeds Civic Hall projection must be made by 5pm on Thursday, June 15, 2017.
