Book of condolence opens in Leeds for Jo Cox MP

A special book of condolence has been opened in Leeds to remember Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox following her tragic death yesterday.

Residents of the city will be able to sign and pay their respects to Jo from 6pm tonight (Friday 17 June) in the Portland Crescent entrance of Leeds Civic Hall.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said:

“Jo was a great friend to many people in Leeds and the number of people who joined us on the Civic Hall steps to remember her, shows what an impact she made, even outside her own constituency.

“Our thoughts remain with Jo’s family as they try to come to terms with their dreadful loss.”

Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Gerry Harper said:

“We understand that many people across Leeds will want to be able to pay their respects following Jo’s tragic death. This book of condolence will allow people to share their thoughts and feelings and show that we stand united with our neighbours in Kirklees.”

As a mark of respect to Jo, flags located on Leeds Town Hall, Leeds Civic Hall, Pudsey Town Hall and Morley Town Hall are currently at half-mast. A minute silence was also held today on the steps of the civic hall which was attended by the leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Judith Blake, the Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Gerry Harper, city councillors, MPs and members of the public.
