Blooming lovely flowers- thanks to teabags, eggshells and veg peelings
Around a third of Leeds’ black bin waste could be converted to cost-saving, sweet-smelling home compost, it’s been revealed during this week’s National Compost Week.
It runs from May 7-13 and people in Leeds are being encouraged to give composting a go.
All you need is the right composting bin and a little know-how and you can significantly reduce your household waste and create an excellent soil conditioner for your garden or houseplants.
This can be used in flower beds, vegetable plots, planters, hanging baskets and window boxes.
No garden or small garden? There are indoor composting systems that take all your kitchen waste including meat and cooked food.
Whether you’re interested in indoor or outdoor composting, for more information about the variety of composting bins available, visit www.leedsgetcomposting.com
Better still, come to one of the council roadshows between 10am and 2pm, talk to our Waste Recycling Advisers and enter the great composting competition for a chance to win your own garden composter.
Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for environment and sustainability said:
“There’s an excellent range of garden composting products available on our website, and roadshows throughout the week for residents all over Leeds to get information and advice.
“It’s never been a better time to adopt a good new habit and reap the environmental and financial benefits of home composting.
“We have a tremendous legacy of fantastic parks and gardens, and the great expertise of allotment holders and residential gardeners here in our great city. Sharing advice and encouraging a love for plants and the environment will continue our green heritage.
