Approvals for more than 1,800 new homes granted by Leeds City Council

Approvals for more than 1,800 new homes in Leeds were granted at a Leeds City Council planning meeting today.

In one of the largest numbers of residential approvals to be granted in a single planning meeting in Leeds in recent times, councillors on the City Plans Panel gave the green light through either full or outline permissions to five schemes across the city.

The largest approval is in the city centre where the City Reach scheme on the former Yorkshire Chemicals site on Kirkstall Road will provide 780 new flats and 234 student bedspaces, together with supporting leisure and retail facilities.

A further 270 homes plus associated roads and infrastructure were approved to be built off Tyersal Lane in Tyersal.

The other three approved applications will see approximately 530 new homes in Micklefield, with 291 on land east of Great North Road together with a possible 60 more, plus approximately 180 off Church Lane.

The approvals continue the trend which has seen permissions given for more than 10,000 new homes in Leeds in the last two years, as part of the Core Strategy aim of providing 66,000 new homes in total by 2028.

The approval for City Reach also follows the council’s commitment to brownfield development, with the current rate seeing approximately 70 per cent of all new homes in Leeds being delivered on brownfield sites.

Leeds City Council executive member for regeneration, transport and planning Councillor Richard Lewis said:

“It is very pleasing that these new homes in such significant numbers have been approved by the plans panel today, as it shows the positive relationship we have with developers who want to invest in our city.

“We are committed to providing the new homes and infrastucture the city needs as it continues to grow, and especially to see brownfield sites redeveloped to boost regeneration and growth and to offer as much affordable housing as possible to make Leeds the ideal place to live, work and visit.”

Chair of the City Plans Panel Councillor Jim McKenna said:

“It was a very busy meeting but we were pleased to approve the applications, in one of the largest single approval meetings we’ve had in the city. These applications are appropriate on sites allocated for development and are of the required quality to enhance what the city has to offer in terms of housing, infrastructure and support facilities. So we were happy to approve them and look forward to seeing them built.”

Outline approval for City Reach development for mixed use residential and student housing, retail and leisure facilities, offices, car and cycle parking, public open space, river bridge, new access junction to Kirkstall Road and highways improvements.

Full approval for residential development of 270 houses with associated roads and infrastructure. Tyersal Lane, Tyersal.

Full approval for development of 291 residential dwellings with open space and associated infrastructure on land east of Great North Road, Micklefield.

Outline approval for residential development of approximately 60 dwellings on land east of Great North Road, Micklefield.

Outline approval for residential development of approximately 180 dwellings on land off Church Lane, Micklefield.
