Leeds Kirkgate Market has gone digital

Sent on behalf of Marketti:

You no longer need to head down the market to find your favourite traders and products with the launch of a new app set to change the way we shop.

This Autumn, the market will be launching an app that revolutionises the way communtities and visitors discover, shop and experience the market.

In partnership with Marketti, a UK based brand that connects market, street food and festival traders, Leeds Market is going online in a bid to boost trader’s incomes, by offering opportunities to shop from the comfort of your sofa or while you’re at the office.

The app will include a facility for e-commerce, click and collect, loyalty and reward options and will provide traders with the facility to take contactless and card payments.

The concept for the app and online shopping platform, built specifically with markets in mind, came from Ellie Gill who has spent a lifetime in the industry, including heading up the Love Your Local Market campaign, on behalf of the National Association of British Market Authorities, which involves 1200 markets across the UK in May each year.

Ellie, who is also a markets advisor to the Major of London told us “I found it so frustrating that traders were not visible enough and that markets were losing customers. Markets are the life blood of healthy town centres and I wanted to find a way for them to compete with larger brands on the high street. Marketti basically gives each market and trader their own app from which to sell, promote themselves and take mobile card payments”.

With close to 100 markets already signing up to the app there will be a number of launch events planned with the Leeds Launch taking place on 4 October at the markets Light Night event.

Cllr Asghar Khan, deputy executive member with responsibility for markets at Leeds City Council, said:

With the market facing significant challenges in today’s economy, as competition from supermarkets, shopping centres, and online stores grow, this new app will provide our traders with the opportunity to reach new customers and help transform how people experience the market.
