Kirkgate is officially Britain’s favourite market

Awards

Leeds Kirkgate Market has been officially named as Britain’s favourite market at a glittering awards ceremony today.

Leeds historic Kirkgate Market, which is currently undergoing a multi-million pound transformation, received the accolade at the annual conference of the National Association for British Markets Authorities. The ‘Favourite Market’ award is a voted for by the public and this year Leeds received the largest number of votes.

Beating off competition from around 100 other markets from across the UK, the Leeds market was named as the best in the country.

Kirkgate Market is the largest indoor market in Europe and is home to some of the most characterful traders in the city, with businesses spanning generations and representing a wide range of nationalities.

Councillor Richard Lewis, executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said:

“Kirkgate is a fantastic market and one that many people in Leeds treasure. The market is full of characters that give the market its charm and atmosphere, and I am sure they are all delighted with this well-deserved result.

“The market is already a great location to visit for shopping as well as having historical significance and impressive architectural features, and once the refurbishment is complete later this year it will offer even more variety of produce and an even more impressive shopping experience.

“After being a runner-up in this competition two years running, it is fantastic news that Kirkgate has finally received the recognition it deserves nationally.”

Kirkgate Market is currently undergoing major refurbishment which will see a new covered daily market and a combined fresh food hall, which is a completely new concept for the market. For the first time in its history, the market is bringing together meat, fish, game and other fresh food produce in one area. This new combined fresh food hall and covered daily market are due to be ready in the spring.
