The Boss calls the shots as Leeds Arena gets an early Springsteen road-test
This press release is issued on behalf of Leeds Arena:
What The Boss wants…
The UK’s newest arena venue – due to officially open its doors in September – to be given an impromptu road test this July at the request of rock legend
The management team at Leeds Arena has revealed today that, ahead of the venue’s official opening this September, heartland rock hero and world-famous music veteran Bruce Springsteen has made a special request to play the new venue this summer.
The show will be a special one-off performance incorporated into his ongoing ‘Wrecking Ball’ world tour. The 13,500 capacity venue is pulling out all the stops to accommodate the multi-award winning ‘Born to Run’ rocker and his E Street Band on Wednesday 24 July.
Tickets for the show go on sale this Friday from 9.00am, priced £65.00.
This will be Springsteen’s first indoor UK show since his arena tour in 2007.
On being approached by Springsteen’s people, director Tony Watson said: “We are delighted that all of our stakeholders' hard work in building a world class arena in Leeds has attracted the attention of an international superstar such as Bruce Springsteen. The team is ecstatic that an artist of this sheer calibre will be providing all of us with, what is effectively, a big dress rehearsal for the arena for its opening season.
“Springsteen has always expressed a love of performing in the UK and, from what I understand, any opportunity to put Leeds Arena through its paces was too much to resist. We’re more than happy to take orders from ‘The Boss’ on this occasion.”
The arena will officially open on 4th September with a performance by Sir Elton John, in what will be the internationally celebrated singer-songwriter’s only UK indoor concert date this year.
Tony continued: “Sir Elton’s performance is still very much the showcase event of our official opening season this September. We’re honoured that he will be coming to the arena with his show. Having an artist of Elton’s fame and standing feature in our opening season is really the icing on the cake of our diverse run of opening events - there really will be something for everyone.
“In the past couple of weeks since Springsteen’s people approached us we’ve been working tirelessly to prepare and bring forward the installation of equipment much earlier than originally planned. After all, we don’t want the audience to be ‘Dancing in the Dark.’
On the exciting news, Councillor Keith Wakefield, Leader of Leeds City Council said: “This is an unexpected but very welcome announcement. To hear that the arena’s appeal is such that the advance actually came from Bruce Springsteen’s people is incredibly exciting. Leeds has waited a long time to welcome him back since his legendary 1985 Roundhay Park concert. It also means that the people of Leeds will be able to enjoy their amazing new arena and it will make its mark on the city’s cultural landscape far earlier than originally anticipated.
“We will be handing over the arena to SMG on schedule towards the end of March and it is then up to them to fit it out to their requirements and open it on a date of their choice. Personally I am delighted at the prospect of a world-famous rock icon such as Bruce Springsteen performing there and am looking forward to him helping us get Leeds Arena firmly on the map.
“This will be consolidated by a genuinely varied opening season in September with the venue being officially opened by Elton John, followed by a diverse range of acts including Micky Flanagan, Leeds’ own Kaiser Chiefs, Andrea Bocelli and more to be announced – there really will be something for everyone. And who know who else might be signed up in the meantime? With over 140 events per year, there is lots more to come."
