Birds of prey, reptiles, tractors and hanging basket masterclasses will all be among the range of attractions on show as Leeds City Council’s parks and countryside service holds its annual open days at Red Hall this weekend.

Following the success of last year’s open day which was attended by 2,000 people, this year’s event to showcase every aspect of the work carried out by the team looking after all parks and green spaces in the city will run from Friday to Sunday (10-12 May) from 9am-3pm each day.

The open days at the Red Hall Nursery near Shadwell are free to attend and will feature a wide range of activities to demonstrate the range of work conducted by the service. Guided tours of the nursery will be on offer along with demonstrations and masterclasses of seed sowing and hanging baskets.

Birds of Prey from Lotherton Hall Bird Garden and reptiles from Tropical World will be on display, along with new-born lambs and goats from Temple Newsam’s Home Farm. The open days will also include displays on forestry and natural habitats as well as allotments and information on the ‘In Bloom’ groups in Leeds.

There will be a football competition plus the chance for budding golfers to try their hand at putting. For younger visitors there will be fairground rides on offer as well as the chance to explore and sit in the parks and countryside fleet of tractors.

Refreshment will be on sale and the nursery shop will be open selling bedding plants, perennials and edibles.

Leeds City Council executive member for the environment Councillor Mark Dobson said:

“The turnout for last year’s open day was amazing with people flocking from all over to come and tour Red Hall and ask questions about gardening, horticulture and the wide range of services the parks and countryside officers carry out.

“This year we have decided to extend it from one day to three and make it a more interactive experience, so we hope that encourages even people and families to come along and take the chance to have a great day out at Red Hall.”

Red Hall nursery is located off Red Hall Lane, LS17 8NB. For more information about the open day, contact the nursery on 0113 237 5210.
