A highly-anticipated sci-fi movie featuring two of Hollywood’s biggest stars will open this year’s 27th Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF27).

Two special 3D screenings of ‘Gravity’ featuring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock will take centre stage as part of the festival’s opening gala at the Everyman Leeds Cinema located in Trinity Leeds on Wednesday 6 November.

Previewed in Leeds two days before its official release on November 8, ‘Gravity’ tells the story of a brilliant engineer on her first shuttle mission with a veteran astronaut before disaster strikes.

Also featuring in the programme as part of the LIFF27 Official Selection category, will be some of the most acclaimed films of the year. These include Cannes Palme D’Or winner ‘Blue is the Warmest Colour’, outstanding Romanian drama ‘Child’s Pose’, Alexander Payne’s latest movie ‘Nebraska’ and a rare screening of Gyórgy Pólfi’s unique ‘Final Cut: Ladies and Gentleman’.

The work of animator and avant-gardist Walerian Borowczyk and Masaki Kobayashi will also be celebrated, and they will be joined in the LIFF27 Retrospectives category by a series of European catalyst films, ranging from Luchino Visconti’s ‘Ossessione’ to Cristi Puiu’s ‘Stuff and Dough’.

As has become tradition, the very best of cult cinema will also be showcased as part of Fanomenon. On offer to fans will include the UK premiere of South Korean action blockbuster ‘Cold Eyes’, and a unique presentation of the complete animated ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Returns’ films. The Leeds Town Hall will also be the host to a number of timeless classics, including ‘The Exorcist’, ‘Jaws’ and ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’.

Budding filmmakers will also have the opportunity to showcase their work, as over 80 short films by new talent will be judged by a five member international jury in the Short Film City category.

Held from 6 November to 21 November, more than 130 feature films, over 130 short films and nearly 250 screening events will be held as part of the Leeds International Film Festival.
