Leeds music centres open their doors to show that music is for all

Leeds will be alive with sound of music this month, when eight community music centres open their doors to the public to help them discover or rediscover their musical talents.

ArtForms, the music and arts service for Leeds City Council, runs eight community music centres across the city which meet every Saturday in term time.

With centres all over the city from Seacroft to Horsforth, Rothwell to Woodhouse, Boston Spa, Moortown and Guiseley, there are opportunities to make beautiful music for everyone.

This May, the centres are hosting open days where everyone is welcome to experience a flavour of what Leeds music centres are all about. There’s no need to book as activities and tours are planned for all morning.

Guiseley and Rothwell music centres will be open for people to try out an instrument or find out what classes and bands are available to join, on Saturday 7 May from 9am to midday.

Boston Spa, South Leeds, East Leeds, North Leeds and Horsforth music centres will be holding their open days on Saturday 14 May.

The centres are a fantastic resource for the city; offering tuition, bands, orchestras and choirs. The music on offer is of broad range and is open to all ages and abilities.

The centres, which have been running for over 40 years, aim to offer every family, every individual, in Leeds the opportunity to learn and make music, regardless of their situation. Lessons start from just £10 per month.

Alex Wibrew, Head of Horsforth Music Centre said:

“The real gold dust of the centres is found not just in the instruments or professional teachers but in the members who attend them. Attending a music centre is not just about learning how to play an instrument or how to sing; it can help children grow in confidence as well as helping people of all ages make new friends and meet people from different backgrounds and from across the city.”
