Congratulations to Alistair Brownlee on winning second place in BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016

The leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Judith Blake, said:

“This year Alistair cemented his position as one of the greatest triathletes the world has ever seen by winning his second Olympic gold medal in Rio, so it’s fitting that his efforts have again been recognised by the British public, this time with second place in the BBC SPOTY awards.

“It is an unbelievable achievement and well deserved recognition of Alistair’s talent, dedication and hard work. We will never forget the moment that Alistair also this year stopped to help his brother Jonny over the finishing line in a race after he was suffering from heat exhaustion. This was a moment that captured the hearts of people right around the world and typified the type of person he is – it is just one of the many reasons why Leeds and Yorkshire is so proud of him.

“We would also like to offer our massive congratulations to the amazing Nicola Adams and Kadeena Cox who also featured on the SPOTY shortlist and have played such a huge part in putting our city on the global sporting map.”
