Commonwealth Day celebrated in Leeds

The Commonwealth flag was raised proudly above two civic buildings this week as Leeds once again played its part in a day of celebrations to mark Commonwealth Day.



Held on Monday March 9, the Lord Mayor of Leeds Cllr David Congreve was joined at the official raising of the Commonwealth Flag at Leeds Civic Hall by children from Hugh Gaitskell Primary School after reading out a special Commonwealth message from Her Majesty The Queen.



After a successful inaugural event last year, over 650 Commonwealth Flags were raised in 38 Commonwealth countries as part of Commonwealth Day, 2015. In Leeds the Commonwealth Flag was also hoisted at Leeds Town Hall to mark the occasion.



The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor David Congreve said:



"It was a real honour to be given the opportunity to read out a special Commonwealth message by Her Majesty The Queen, as flags were raised on the civic hall and town hall to mark Leeds celebrating Commonwealth Day.



"I would also like to offer a big thank you to the youngsters from Hugh Gaitskell Primary School who joined us on the day at the official raising of the flag at the civic hall, which was a really lovely way for our city to both recognise and celebrate the values that bind Commonwealth countries together."
