Comment on the death of Leeds actress Liz Dawn

Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Judith Blake said:

“On behalf of the city of Leeds we are very saddened to hear of the passing of Liz Dawn. Liz was one of Britain’s best-loved actresses and was very proud of her Leeds and Yorkshire roots, being a tremendous ambassador for the city and carrying out tireless work for charity. Her breast cancer charity raised more than a million pounds which funded a specialist cancer unit at St James’s Hospital, which has helped the lives of countless people in the city.

"Her MBE for services to charity in 2000 was richly deserved, the same year she served as Lady Mayoress of Leeds representing her home city alongside her great friend Bernard Atha, a role which she described as an honour. She will be very fondly remembered, much-missed, and our thoughts at this time are with her family and friends.”
